How to change your outgoing (SMTP) server port number

This article covers changing your outgoing SMTP port number in your mail program. Many mail programs try to use port 25 for outgoing mail by default but in most cases that will not work correctly as many ISP’s have begun blocking access to port 25 to help control spam.

Follow the instructions below to change your outgoing SMTP port number and enable SMTP authentication.

Please note: By default the incoming port number is 110. Do NOT change the incoming port number.

For Outlook 2010/2013/2016:
1) Click on the “File” menu and select “Account Settings” ***
2) Select your e-mail account, then click “Change”
3) Click on the More Settings button
4) Click on the “Advanced” tab
5) Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port to 587
6) Make sure the checkbox labeled “This server requires a secure connection” is not checked
7) Click on the “Outgoing Server” tab
8) Check the box labeled “My server requires authentication” and make sure it’s set to “Use same settings as incoming mail server”and click “OK”
9) Click “Next” and then “Finish” to save your changes.

***The very latest version of Outlook has changed the settings layout and you can no longer access the settings here. To access the settings in Outlook 2016 v. 1807 go to Control Panel -> Mail, click the “Email Accounts” button, then click to select your email account and click the “Change” button.

For Outlook 2007:
1) Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Account Settings”
2) Select your e-mail account, then click “Change”
3) Click on the More Settings button
4) Click on the “Advanced” tab
5) Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port to 587
6) Make sure the checkbox labeled “This server requires a secure connection” is not checked
7) Click on the “Outgoing Server” tab
8) Check the box labeled “My server requires authentication” and make sure it’s set to “Use same settings as incoming mail server”and click “OK”
9) Click “Next” and then “Finish” to save your changes.

For Outlook 2002 and 2003:
1) Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Email Accounts”
2) Select “View or change existing e-mail accounts” then click “Next”
3) Select your e-mail account, then click “Change”
4) Click on the More Settings button
5) Click on the “Advanced” tab
6) Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port to 587
7) Make sure the checkbox labeled “This server requires a secure connection” is not checked
8) Click on the “Outgoing Server” tab
9) Check the box labeled “My server requires authentication” and make sure it’s set to “Use same settings as incoming mail server” and then click “OK”
10) Click “Next” and then “Finish” to save your changes.

For Outlook Express, Outlook 1998, Outlook 2000, and Vista/Windows Mail:
1) Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Accounts”
2) Click on the Mail tab
3) Highlight your mail account and click “Properties”
4) Click on the “Advanced” tab
5) Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port to 587
6) Make sure the checkbox labeled “This server requires a secure connection” is not checked
7) Click on the “Servers” tab
8) Check the box labeled “My server requires authentication”
9) Click on “Settings” and make sure it’s set to “Use same settings as incoming mail server” and then click “OK”
10) Click “Apply” and then “OK” and save your changes.

On Outlook for Mac
1) Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Accounts”
2) Highlight your email account in the left column
3) Check the box labeled “Override default port” beneath the outgoing mail server
4) Change the outgoing mail server port to 587
5) Make sure the checkbox labeled “Use SSL to connect” is not checked
6) Click on “More Options” and set the “Authentication” field to “Use incoming server info”
7) Close the window to save your changes.

On Mail for Mac OS X (Version 10.x and higher)
1) Go to the Mail menu and choose Preferences.
2) Click on the “Accounts” icon and then highlight your e-mail account
3) Click on the “Server Settings” tab
4) In the “Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)” section, uncheck the box labeled “Automatically manage connection settings”
5) Enter your username and password for your email account. This information is the same your incoming login information.
6) Set the outgoing server port to 587
7) Make sure “Authentication” is set to “Password”
8) Uncheck the box for “Use TLS/SSL”

On Mail for Mac OS X (Version 8.x and 9.x)
1) Go to the Mail menu and choose Preferences.
2) Click on the “Accounts” icon and then highlight your e-mail account
3) Click on your outgoing mail server name and select “Edit SMTP server list”
4) Click on the “Advanced” tab
5) Uncheck the box labeled “Automatically detect and maintain account settings”
6) Set the outgoing server port to 587
7) Make sure “Authentication” is set to “Password”
8) Make sure the checkbox for “Use SSL” is not checked.
9) Enter your username and password for your email account and click OK. This information is the same your incoming login information.

iPhone/iPad:
1) Click/tap on “Settings” and select “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” or, on newer versions of iOS, tap on “Accounts and Passwords”
2) Click on your mail account
3) Click on the Outgoing (SMTP) server name
4) Your mail server should be listed as the “Primary Server”. Click on it again to view the advanced settings.
5) Enter your email username and password
6) Click on “Authentication” and make sure “Password” is selected.
7) Change the server port to 587
8) Make sure “Use SSL” is set to “Off”
9) Click “Done” to save your changes.

On Mail for Mac OS X (Version 3.x – 6.x)
1) Go to the Mail menu and choose Preferences.
2) Click on the “Accounts” icon and then highlight your e-mail account
3) Click on your outgoing mail server name and select “Edit server list”
4) Click on the “Advanced” tab
5)Select “Use custom port” and then set the outgoing server port to 587
6) Make sure “Authentication” is set to “Password”
7) Make sure the checkbox for “Use secure socket layers” is not checked.
8) Enter your username and password for your email account and click OK. This information is the same your incoming login information.

On Mail for Mac OS X (Version 2.x)
1) Go to the Mail menu and choose Preferences.
2) Click on the “Accounts” icon and then highlight your e-mail account
3) Click the “Server Settings” button, which should be located directly beneath your outgoing mail server name.
4) Change the Outgoing server port to 587
5) Make sure “Authentication” is set to “Password”
6) Make sure the checkbox for “Use secure socket layers” is not checked.
7) Enter your username and password for your email account and click OK. This information is the same your incoming login information.
8) Close the window to save your changes.

On Thunderbird for Mac or Windows (Version 3.x):
1) Open Thunderbird. Click the “Tools” menu and select “Account Settings”.
2) Select “Outgoing server” in the left column.
3) Highlight your outgoing mail server and click “Edit”
4) Change the Outgoing server port to 587
5) Set the Connection Security option to “SSL” and then set the Authentication Method to “Password, transmitted insecurely”.
6) Enter your username. This is the same as your incoming username, which can be found under “Server Settings”.
7) Click OK to save your changes.

On Thunderbird for Mac or Windows (Older versions):
1) Open Thunderbird. Click the “Tools” menu and select “Account Settings”.
2) Select “Outgoing server” in the left column.
3) Highlight your outgoing mail server and click “Edit”
4) Change the Outgoing server port to 587
5) Check the box labeled “Use name and password”
6) Enter your username. This is the same as your incoming username, which can be found under “Server Settings”.
7) Set “Use secure connection” to “Yes”
8) Click OK to save your changes.

On Mac Outlook Express & Entourage:
1) Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Accounts”
2) Highlight your mail account and click “Edit”
3) Select “Click here for advanced sending options”
4) Check the box labeled “Override default SMTP port” box
5) Change the Outgoing server port to 587
6) Make sure the box labeled “SMTP service requires secure connection” is checked.
7) Check the box labeled “SMTP server requires authentication”
8) Make sure it’s set to “Use same settings as incoming mail server” and then click “OK”

For Eudora:
1) Click on the “Special” menu and select “Settings”
2) Select “Sending Mail” in the left column
3) Check the boxes labeled “Use Submission port” and “Allow Authorization”
4) Set the “Secure sockets when sending” drop-down menu to “Always”

Eudora OSE:
1) Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Account Settings”
2) Select “Outgoing Mail Server” in the left column
3) Highlight your outgoing mail server and select “Edit”
4) Change the server port to 587
5) Check “Use name and password” and enter your email username
6) Make sure “Connection Security” is set to “None”
7) Click OK
